Loki episode 1 has finally arrived on Disney+, bringing with it big questions about the MCU multiverse, time travel, and the God of Mischief himself. The new show stars Tom Hiddleston, Owen Wilson, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Wunmi Mosaku, Eugene Cordero, and Tara Strong, and Sophia Di Martino and Richard E. Grant in undisclosed roles. Fans have called for a Loki solo movie or series for years, and now they’re finally getting their wish.
The first episode of Loki is a whirlwind of exposition, new characters, flashbacks, and revelations about the very nature of the MCU. After escaping from his original Avengers capture thanks to the events of Avengers: Endgame, Loki is apprehended by agents of the Time Variance Authority, or TVA. The trickster is dubbed a “variant” by the agency, as his escape was not part of the “Sacred Timeline” that keeps the universe in balance. Further exposition reveals that the universe was once a proper multiverse, but that the different timelines fought with each other, leading to chaos. After being informed of the importance of the sacred timeline and shown a highlight reel of his time in the MCU, Loki is offered a choice – be destroyed, or help TVA agent Mobius M. Mobius (Wilson) stop another Loki variant currently wreaking havoc across time.
