Jurassic World: Dominion’s plan to bring back original Jurassic Park stars shows how the movie avoids the Star Wars sequels’ mistake with legacy characters. Hollywood has become increasingly interested in bringing back previous franchise stars as IP continues to reign supreme. The Marvel Cinematic Universe and DC Extended Universe are using the multiverse to bring past franchise stars into their current shared universes. Meanwhile, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Terminator: Dark Fate, and other blockbusters have brought back legacy stars in more traditional ways.
When Universal and director Colin Trevorrow relaunched the Jurassic franchise in 2015, they introduced a new cast. After two films starring Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, Jurassic World: Dominion brings back original franchise stars Sam Neill, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum. It’s been twenty years since Neill and Dern were part of the series, and Goldblum only broke his 21-year absence earlier when he had a cameo in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. The return of the franchise’s legacy characters is one of many reasons why fans are so excited for the next installment. The anticipation of seeing Alan Grant, Ellie Sattler, and Ian Malcolm together on screen is huge.
