Aside from what I pointed out earlier, the Superman trailer being edited with Smallville’s theme song made me realize how much Gunn is letting the iterations of the past influence his version of Superman. Gunn has made it no secret that his Superman story is going to honor what has come before while also marking a beginning for the DCU, which the TikTok edit above proves. The fact that the Smallville theme song does not feel out of place alongside Gunn’s Superman is certainly a sign of this.

Smallville is a show that many consider a near-perfect depiction of the character. While it has its issues, Smallville’s characterization of Clark and Superman is beloved, which Gunn will undoubtedly be aware of. The elements showing Clark in Superman’s trailer blend with the music so well, potentially hinting that the DCU’s version of the character will align with that of Smallville, while also taking cues from the DCEU’s version, Brandon Routh’s Superman, and, of course, Christopher Reeve’s too.
