Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton cites Jackie Chan and Ang Lee’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon as influences. The 25th installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe centers on the titular character as he confronts his past and the clandestine Ten Rings organization ran by his father, The Mandarin. After an eight-month search for the performer who would become the first Asian-American lead for the MCU, Simu Liu was cast in 2019 to star as Shang-Chi and lead a cast that includes Awkwafina, Tony Leung, Michelle Yeoh, and Fala Chen.
Much like fellow MCU cultural landmark Black Panther, an adaptation of Steve Englehart and Jim Starlin’s comic book character has been in the works since the comic book publisher formed its film production branch. Development was fast-tracked in 2018 on the heels of the Chadwick Boseman-led film’s success as well as the success of Crazy Rich Asians. Much like many films from last year, its release date was delayed numerous times due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic before settling on its September 3 theatrical release followed by Disney+ 45 days later.
