Before Daenerys in Game of Thrones, one Targaryen king had the upsetting title of being the last dragon rider in Westeros. Game of Thrones season 1 establishes that dragons died out over 100 years before Daenerys and her brother Viserys Targaryen’s generation, with the closest they had come to the creatures being their skulls in the Red Keep. However, Daenerys Targaryen miraculously hatches the three dragons Drogon, Rhaegal, and Viserion during Game of Thrones’ timeline, making her the last dragonrider in Westeros before her death.
Beginning 200 years before Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon depicts the Targaryen family dynasty at the height of its reign. By this time, the dragonriding House Targaryen has ruled Westeros on the Iron Throne for over 100 years, with the Game of Thrones prequel series featuring a staggering 17 dragons. While most Targaryen and Velaryon characters will be dragon riders during House of the Dragon, the series’ major conflict also ends shortly before every dragon dies out in Westeros.
