HBO’s House of the Dragon season 1 is taking Game of Thrones’ old release time slot on Sundays. The series marks the first official spinoff of Game of Thrones, which remains a highly popular property for HBO and HBO Max despite controversy over its final season. Nonetheless, House of the Dragon is set to be one of HBO Max’s biggest shows to date, with the House Targaryen-centered prequel series’ first season finally premiering on August 21.
House of the Dragon is set 200 years before Game of Thrones’ timeline amidst the height of House Targaryen’s family dynasty and dragon power. The cast and characters for House of the Dragon season 1 include Emma D’Arcy (and Milly Alcock) as Rhaenyra Targaryen, Olivia Cooke (and Emily Carey) as Alicent Hightower, Paddy Considine as King Viserys I Targaryen, Steve Toussaint as Corlys Velaryon, Eve Best as Rhaenys Velaryon (née Targaryen), and Matt Smith as Daemon Targaryen. As the succession of the Iron Throne is contested, House Targaryen will find itself in the middle of a catastrophic civil war.
House of the Dragon’s first season will have ten episodes, each of which will run for roughly one hour. Season 1’s tentative schedule is as follows:
