According to director Bryan Andrews, season 2 of Marvel Studios’ animated series What If…? will be much wilder than the first. Based on the comic book series of the same name, What If…? re-imagines classic stories in the Marvel Cinematic Universe had key events played out differently. For example, season 1 saw Peggy Carter given the Super Soldier Serum instead of Steve Rogers and T’Challa become Star-Lord instead of Peter Quill. Despite the series’ anthology format, its narrator, The Watcher, assembled the Guardians of the Multiverse to stop Ultron from destroying the MCU’s multiverse in season 1’s final episodes.
What If…? released after Loki liberated the multiverse, effectively establishing everything that occurred in the former as MCU canon. What If…? offered entertaining twists on beloved characters (voiced by an impressive roster of MCU veterans) in Phases 1-3. However, it ultimately felt inconsequential to the universe’s larger Phase 4 narrative. What If…? season 2 will release in 2023 and draw from Phase 4 films before the already-confirmed season 3.
