Anthony Mackie addresses Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes’ future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With Captain America: New World Order slated to release on May 3, 2024, many fans have wondered if Bucky Barnes will return alongside Sam Wilson’s Captain America after the events of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. While the characters of Isaiah Bradley and Joaquin Torres will return, Sebastian Stan’s Bucky was not announced as part of the main cast during Marvel Studios’ panel at this year’s D23 Expo.
Bucky will be joining the Thunderbolts, alongside Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Red Guardian (David Harbour), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), Taskmaster (Olga Kurlyenko) and U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell). At D23 Expo, Stan jokingly expressed how happy he is not teaming up with Sam Wilson for another project, and that Bucky would be doing his own thing from now on. However, Mackie sees it differently when it comes to Sam and Bucky’s future in the MCU.
