Squid Game star Lee Jung-jae has teased what fans can expect from his portrayal of Gi Hun ahead of filming the breakout South Korean survival drama’s season 2. Season 1 of Squid Game featured Gi Hun, also referred to as Player 456, as the protagonist, participating in the lethal title game to settle the debts he accumulated while struggling to maintain employment and developing a subsequent gambling problem. Though he is a complicated character who makes dubious ethical choices, Gi Hun is a largely sympathetic lead whom the majority of the show’s fans rooted for as he found himself facing increasingly desperate circumstances.
In an interview with GQ, Squid Game lead Lee Jung-jae reveals what could be in store for Gi Hun’s season 2 character arc. According to the Emmy winner, fans should expect to see new dimensions to the character now that he has reentered the real world after emerging from the games victorious. Lee expresses his excitement in getting to “perform the darker side of [Gi Hun],” indicating that viewers will see him lean into the thirst for vengeance that was hinted at in the season 1 finale.
