It’s #PaybackTime for Big Oil.
NEON and Think-Film Impact Production have launched a new video calling for an end to climate deception, featuring Michael Shannon, Oscar-nominated actor and star of Joshua Oppenheimer’s upcoming narrative feature, The End.
Shannon, who plays a former oil tycoon in Oppenheimer’s post-apocalyptic musical, addresses the role that widespread climate deception by the fossil fuel industry has played in the climate crisis and calls for Big Oil to do what his character could not – take responsibility.
The video comes as a record number of communities in the United States, representing more than one quarter of the U.S. population, are fighting in court to hold Big Oil companies accountable for deceiving the public about their role in the climate crisis, according to the Center for Climate Integrity, a nonprofit that supports and tracks such lawsuits.
Global Witness has also since launched a campaign at cop29.com with a number of other celebrities, activists, and climate groups, including The End star George McKay, demanding that Big Oil pay up for their role in climate breakdown.
