The streaming numbers for The Last of Us have beaten an HBO record, which is a good sign for TLOU season 2. Based on the post-apocalyptic video game of the same name, The Last of Us quickly became a massive hit for HBO. The Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey-starring series has received critical acclaim, proving that video game adaptations can be high-quality. The Last of Us has also been widely successful with audiences, with an average audience score of 91 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. While the critical acclaim for TLOU season 1 is great, the record-breaking streaming numbers on HBO Max truly prove how special the show is.
According to the latest Nielsen ratings, the Last of Us premiere surpassed House of the Dragon in streaming figures. In August 2022, the Game of Thrones prequel debut had an impressive 10 million viewers tuning in, becoming the most-watched HBO series debut at the time. However, Nielsen reports that the first full week after its January 15 premiere, The Last of Us had amassed 837 million minutes watched, beating out House of the Dragon’s 741 million minutes the week after its first broadcast. Game of Thrones has been quite the popular franchise for HBO, so it’s especially impressive that The Last of Us beat its numbers.
