The latest Avatar 3 updates state the film has been confirmed for several years now, and the lengthy wait time between the first film and its follow-ups is long enough to give James Cameron and his writing team the opportunity to work out the story in advance. Cameron’s sequel plan is more thoroughly laid out in Avatar: The Way of Water, and the director says a big part of the reason he continues to make Avatar sequels is to continue working with the cast and crew.
Other Avatar 3 updates state that the film aims to also carry on the Sully family’s story, with Stephen Lang’s Colonel Quaritch serving as the third film’s primary antagonist once more alongside Oona Chaplin’s Varanga. Cameron’s plans for Avatar 3 are more solidified since the sequel was filmed simultaneously with Avatar: The Way of Water, with motion-capture performances for Avatar 3 and parts of Avatar 4 completed all the way back in 2018. What’s more, Avatar 3 updates confirm it’s expected to explore new parts of Pandora, as well as new clans of Na’vi, branching out further than ever before.
