Inspiration behind this video:
While One Piece is a beloved series that continues to enthrall and excite dedicated fans even after almost 26 years, there is an incredible amount of pressure on Netflix’s take on the series. With a large dedicated following, expectations are high and questions remain as to whether Netflix can faithfully translate the manga into live-action in a way that remains faithful to the source material’s art and story. While One Piece’s poster teased the core cast, much of the series still remains unseen, as such, viewers have yet to truly determine whether Netflix can capture the world of One Piece.
Furthermore, Netflix’s track record with previous adaptations of beloved anime and manga has left anime viewers skeptical about how the company could approach the series. Projects such as Netflix and Adam Wingard’s 2017 Death Note movie adaptation and the live-action Cowboy Bebop television series were poorly received, with criticisms in particular noting their handling of the source material. Netflix’s methods of approving series for renewal also has audiences doubting the show’s success, the company’s strict guidelines for approving new seasons could see a successful adaptation of One Piece canceled before it can find an audience and adapt later chapters.
