The Inspiration behind this video:
In addition to Guilt, Shame, Jealousy, Awe, and Nostalgia, there are clearly a number of other characters present in this concept art. The bottom right corner of the middle two images, for example, features a character with yellow skin, spiky hair, and glasses who gives a dubious look. Given the facial expression, this character might have been Suspicion, which would fit with the alternate versions surrounding it. The figure could have even been something like Stubbornness, a popular teenage state, because the expression on their face could be interpreted as some sort of indignant glance.
Another nixed emotion from Inside Out 2 was Schadenfreude, a German word that refers to the feeling of joy at someone elseβs expense. According to the Inside Out 2 team, this was an idea that Pete Docter originally had for the first Inside Out film, but it ended up cut from both. Instead, the team opted for more concrete emotions, eventually settling on Anxiety, Envy, Ennui, and Embarrassment after consulting with an expert. Hopefully, these emotions help Inside Out 2 capture the experience of puberty as well as the original did Riley’s childhood.
